| Date M/D/Y |
Band(s) w/ |
Venue, Location | Significance | Special/Extras |
| 4/10/1992 | Metallica | Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA | First Concert! Metallica "Black /Self-Titled Album" tour with no openers. | First ugly tour shirt- "Enter Sandman" design. |
| 7/1992 | Don Mclean | Waterside, Norfolk, VA | Outdoor. | Mom & Dad took Pluta and me. Met Don Mclean(and he was shocked we were so young and knew who he was). |
| 6/1992 | Tool w/ Failure | Boathouse | Absolutely blown away by both bands. | First mosh experience where Pluta and I thought we would die. |
| 9/2/1992 | Toad the Wet Sprocket | Boathouse | ||
| 11/7/1992 | Ozzy Osbourne w/ Sepultura, Alice in Chains |
Norfolk Scope, Norfolk, VA | Went for Alice in Chains; Layne Staley had a broken leg in a cast as the band took rides in his wheelchair. Ozzy looked old even then- managed to not play "No More Tears" despite the tour and latest album's namesake. | Ugliest $30 tour shirt ever from Alice with giant eyeball/bones. First show with Brian Pluta (who, for all in tents and purposes, would be a de facto concert attendee with Dean for nearly every show through the next ten years) |
| 9/30/1993 | Radiohead, Belly w/ The Bats | Boathouse, Norfolk, VA | Amazing double bill for $10. Radiohead's initial U.S. Pablo Honey tour just as "Creep" was hitting radio. | Second ugliest tour shirt ever with giant baby on Radiohead purple shirt. |
| 1992/3? | Blues Traveler w/ Sheryl Crow | Boathouse | No one had any idea who Sheryl Crow was | First show with Corri |
| 4/13/1993 | Toad the Wet Sprocket w/ Dave Mattews Band | William & Mary Hall, Williamsburg, VA | No one knew Dave Matthews and Toad's singer Glen Phillips asked the crowd to send him a tape of Dave's set if anyone taped it. | The infamous box seat from William and Mary was smuggled out. It has resided in many states via Kris and Zach Walker and recently returned to VA to Dean's house. A poster for the show was around, stained with ice cream from the Williamsburg shop it was taken from. |
| 7/1993 | Stone Temple Pilots, Butthole Surfers | Strawberry Banks Lodge | Outdoor show on the water. | |
| 1993 | Paul Westerberg w/School of Fish | Waterside | Outdoor, nearly cancelled due to severe thunderstorms and lightning (frequently interrupted) | |
| 1993 | Indigo Girls w/ Aimee Mann, World Party | Strawberry Hill State Fairgrounds & Classic Amphitheater | Fully introduced to World Party. | |
| 6/27/1993 | 10,000 Maniacs | Strawberry Hill State Fairgrounds & Classic Amphitheater, Richmond, VA | Although unannounced at the time, at the end of the tour just days after seeing them,10,000 Maniacs (with Natalie Merchant) broke up. Dad went with me to this one, Mom never lets us live it down. | |
| 6/28/1994 | Toad the Wet Sprocket w/ Geggy Tah | Strawberry Banks Lodge, Hampton, VA | Outdoor show on the water. | Met the band with autographs from Dean Dinning and Glen Phillips. Played with the Geggy Tah dog "Gina" before the show. |
| 8/18/1994 | Live | Boathouse | Posters from Throwing Copper. | |
| 1994 | Weezer, Archers of Loaf | Boathouse | Met Pat and Matt of Weezer, autographs... Passed note to Archers of Loaf member who Pluta knew. | |
| 1994 | Toad the Wet Sprocket w/ Milla | Boathouse | Milla was Milla Jovavich, actress (who was impressive as a songtress at the time). | |
| 1994 | They Might Be Giants w/ Chris Stamey | Boathouse | Giant congo line. | Drum stick. |
| 11/25/1994 | Nine Inch Nails w/ Marylin Manson and Jim Rose Circus | Hampton Coliseum | First time seeing NIN, The Downward Spiral tour | Met then drummer and partial NIN founder Chris Vrenna at soundboard w/ Brian Pluta. Bungled the entire thing, didn't have a pen. Last time I ever didn't take a sharpie to a concert. |
| 1994 | Egypt | Randolph-Macon College (RMC), Ashland, VA | A year later the charismatic lead singer was dead. | Met Egypt on the way to a beach gig just days later (at a Taco Bell). |
| 4/1/1995 | Live w/ Love Spit Love, Sponge | ODU Field House, Norfolk, VA | Ed K. of the band appeared right behind us during his "disappearing" act for the song "White, Discussion." | |
| 1995 | They Might Be Giants | Mayo Island, Richmond, VA | First show at Mayo Island. | |
| 1995 | Soul Coughing | Mayo Island | ||

| 4/9/1995 | Toad the Wet Sprocket, Joan Jett... many others | Washington DC Mall | The NOW's Violence Against Women Rally on the Mall. One of the largest ever. First time the Clothesline Project from the entire nation in one place. Heard many major political and social leaders speak. Toad was the only set of males on stage besides Jesse Jackson. | Button. |
| 7/23/1995 | Live, Catherine Wheel, Buffalo Tom | Strawberry Hill State Fairgrounds & Classic Amphitheater | ||
| 10/6/1995 | David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails w/ Prick | Nissan Pavillion, NC | Technically this was David Bowie's Outside tour, but NIN essentially co-headlined. "Reptile", "Hurt" and "Scary Monsters" were duets between David Bowie and Trent Reznor. | I had pneumonia but went anyway. NIN played "Piggy" in the Further Down the Spiral style. Awesome lights. Bootleg Children of the Night is from this show. |
| 5/5/1996 | Squirrel Nut Zippers, Bio Ritmo | Mayo Island | Cinco de Mayo | Met the Zippers. |
| 1996 | Buffalo Tom | Flood Zone, Richmond, VA | Had to leave early thanks to idiot tag-along. | |
| 1996 | Henry Rollins (spoken word) | Flood Zone | ||

| 10/4/1996 | Radiohead w/ David Gray | 9:30 Club | Pre- OK Computer tour. | |

Incredible setlist of relative rareties. Dean's seen two of the only 7 times "Crown of Thorns" has been played live by Pearl Jam (other time in Philly '05). Ed did the surprise-middle-of-the-audience-encore by singing "Last Kiss" from the soundboard. | Second fanclub ticket purchase that Jamie had to get with my login because I was in line for NIN's soundcheck at the March 14th show in Richmond. Great seats. |

Marv "Wolfman" sang a tune, as did a local female singer. | Show started an hour late - first date of a regular Sunday night gig at Jin Jean's. Kermit bought the entire house a drink. Great version of "What is New Orleans?" with the crowd invited to come up to the mic and say what New Orleans is to them. Sax special as vocal track on "Isn't She Lovely?" cover. Featured in my blogs on NOLA visit. |

John Paul Jones played with everyone. | 3rd Year; Cor, Jamie & Stacy (the Fantastic Four); Whigs Setlist & autos, Dixie Dirt Setlist- incredible spot for New Orleans Mardi Gras Indians, Ziggy Marley, Ben Harper, and The Police |
| 7/20-22/07 | Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO), Bret Dennen,
Cracker, Fountains of Wayne, |
XPoNential Music Festival, Wiggins Park; in Philadelphia (actually held in Camden, NJ) |
Relatively rare Bob Mould solo show cancelled thanks to broken ankle. Rhett Miller added as a surprise fill-in for Sunday. |
Addy's first music festival;proudly accompanied by close friend of the family (and Dean's longtime concert-going partner) Brian Pluta; Addy's first big show takes place just yards away from where, almost 4 years to the day, Dean and Brian chatted about the news that Addy was on the way.
Met Bret Dennen, most of ALO (Zach, Steve & Dan); Addy got to chat with Zach, get her first setlist (ALO) and stayed at the front row for the whole ALO set. Had photos taken of and with Fionn Regan (female singer in Fionn Regan took to Addy's smile & dance.) |
| 11/15/2007 | The Police | Bobcat Arena, Charlotte, NC | Show night before was cancelled (in Philly) due to illness of Sting, big worries over whether this show would have the same fate. | Setlist, posters; had remarkable seat dead center, only a handful of rows back. The music was amazing, you could hardly tell Sting was sick. In fact, this show was one of, if not the, best live concert I've seen, likely 50% just with the personal value, but it truly was incredible musicianship. The most amazing noise for 3 people... Best non-Bonnaroo music experience yet.

a youtube video here of the final song, "Mary" led by Patty.
|
| 4/16/2008 | Mike Doughty, The Panderers | New Daisy Theater, Memphis, TN | Band and soundman chose each song to play, went with co-worker on trip to Memphis |

| 11/5/2008 | Nine Inch Nails with HEALTH |
John Paul Jones Arena, UVA, Charlottesvlle, VA | Trent was chatty... at least at the prescribed time. He commented about the election from the day before, where after 8 years of George W. Bush (the antagonist subject of an entire album by NIN, Year Zero), Barack Obama had been elected against all odds as the 44th President of the United States: "No matter how good you think we are, it can't match yesterday." and now, "I'll have to find something else to write about... here's another soon to be out-of-date song..." | 7th time; On the rail up front for the first time ever at an NIN show |
| 11/15/2008 | Amy Ray (Indigo Girls) and Jennifer O'Connor | Capital Ale House, Richmond, VA | Jennifer Joined Amy Ray for a song | PRIOR: Wrote Jennifer O'Connor a note to say how happy I was she was coming and she wrote back. :) Angela down for the show, so as total music nerds (her more for Amy, me for Jennifer) we were up front and center with Cor & Laura backing us up. Got to see/meet Jennifer O'Connor; Setlist, autograph on limited 45 |

Jennifer O'Connor dedicated the song, "Exeter" with a, "This one's for you Dean" and frankly, I blushed the whole song. So cool that anyone would ever do that, much less a favorite singer/songwriter that I admire like Jennifer. Laura, Miller & Cor Setlist & autograph of Jennifer O'Connor; Chatted with Darren Jesse & Jennifer O'Connor |

| 6/11-14/2009 | BONNAROO: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band |
Manchester, TN | #5 | Top 10 Bonnaroo 2009 Moments 10. Beastie Boys - Danced like crazy,
all the right songs. Still funny, irreverent and very real in a world
where hip hop has often become overly pre-programmed and slicked back. 9. Sam Cooke - He may not have appeared,
but my insistence to listen to an old tape of his music as Steve and I
drove in became an omen to several covers of his songs by more than a
handful of artists. 8. Public Enemy arming a massive crowd
with verbal weaponry - Oh, and yeah, shaking Flava Flave's hand, and he
my hat. :) Best FF shot ever: http://www.flickr.com/photos/delineated/3634868737/ 7. Booker T. & the Drive By Truckers: "Let There Be Rock" - first off, in full-disclosure I am not very well-versed in DBT lore. I knew of them, knew they were supposed to be great, but had never seen them. Booker T. was a must-see in my book and hey, I was camping at the Which Stage anyway. But when they played one of the most ridiculously passionate and appropriate renditions of DBT's "Let There Be Rock" I nearly wept. It was far more southern rock than I typically like but I was totally taken. A big surprise for me personally and a good time. 6. Discovering by merely walking by -
Twice I was stopped in my tracks by music wafting from nearby, once on
a tiny tent set near a BBQ stand where I would discover Belleville Outfit
and again later on one of the largest stages (Which) where Mike Farris
and the Roseland Rhythm Revue belted out Sam Cooke. Never knew either
band before those moments. 5. Al Green - I'll let my Tweet take this one: "Al Green is an f'ing force of nature. I believe the correct order is: Water, Al Green, Fire, Earth & Wind" - he hit the high notes, the floor and all of us in the face with a tremendous performance in front of thousands likely conceived to his music. 4. Band of Horses - For a band where I was only in love with a couple of songs, they were the perfect compliment to other major Sunday afternoon performances at Roo. Closing the Which Stage is a careful and important slot, previously done with aplomb by Death Cab for Cutie, and BoH not only didn't disappoint, they seemed to be courting the audience with their songs. Breaking convention, they actually saved new songs for their encore and we loved them all the more. (And hey, Springsteen thought so too: http://bonnaroo.com/blog/99.aspx ) 3. Thursday Night - Easily the best Thursday
since my first in 05, with first and second impressions stacking for a
powerful night of music and friends. 2. Front row rail for the last performance on the home continent of my favorite band for the last 20 years; NIN, with a "Wave Goodbye" - To be able to experience that, and then have that experience validated by tens of thousands of people chant "Thank you Trent," while watching bassist JMJ and everyone in front tear up... perfect, heartbreaking and incredible at the same time. 1. The friends and community - This may seem like a cop-out, but I'm completely serious. This year was tremendous for me as I was coming alone and perfectly content to be the "wanderer" who just jetted out on his own. I found that while I did get some wandering done, it was the friendships and shared experiences that enhanced every step with someone and even that time alone. And there's a reason it ranks above NIN- because of the support of everyone who was proud and genuinely excited for me and more-- excited for me to have that experience even if they weren't nearly as interested (or even like!) Nine Inch Nails. I had some incredible conversations, libations and gyrations (dancing, that is). So here's to you my friends, who helped me start, continue and cap an incredible Bonnaroo that was, and I don't say this lightly, THE BEST Bonnaroo I have ever had in my 5 trips to the farm... |
