Part 1: From the Ashes

I'll never forget the first months of owning my first game system, a brand new Nintendo... Renting games was a new concept to begin with, but a ragged "we've got a back room" video rental place did decide to try a hand at renting video games nearby. When I got there, the sense of disappointment was always enormous and the prospect of owning the system (when I couldn't afford many games) and yet actually playing more than Super Mario or Duck Hunt was dim. There were about eight or nine games at the most, and of course they were always checked out. I spent many an unfulfilling evening battling the crooks on Hogan's Alley or vainly creating horrible Excitebike courses the dog would wipe out with a paw-kick to the reset button. It's the feeling that makes you almost regret blowing the money on a system, and it's a feeling that collectively can kill a Game system nowadays with too few games upon launch. And so in that spirit Apple launches a revolutionary system (at least in terms of previous design overhaul, if not in actual interface) and we hope and pray we won't be visiting our online retailer to look at all five of our app choices.

A quick nod to the resources that are www.macosxapps.com and Apple's own OS X "Built for" page which does a great job of running down the apps-a-comin'. But are the core, recognizable faces that the novice computer user needs to see to feel secure in their purchase be there? How quickly?

There are apps converts will need to see (or at least like to see) that can be the difference between a quick let's-go-for-it purchase and dive into the Mac world, and a wait and see (or a nevermind). I don't particularly care for all these apps, but PC users need to see the goods.

Friendly (or at least crucial) faces:

App Version When? Consider an Alternate
Internet Explorer 5.0 Mar/01 iCab, available now
Microsoft Office ? Fall/01 Appleworks, March/01?
Dreamweaver 4.0 April/01 Freeway, mid-2001
Photoshop 6.0 ?-TBA Fireworks, April/01
Fetch 4.0 Mar/01 Just use Fetch, mmmkay?
Quake 3A Soon Alice, I hope...
Minesweeper (Mega) 1.7 Now MacSolitaire, now
ICQ 2.4 Now ICQ is pretty standard...
iTunes 2? Mar/01? SoundJam, now...
