Part 1: From the Ashes

OS X is still a couple of months away from full impact, but the rumble can be heard right now. As pride and praise over OS X flower in the outside world, creativity and tempers flare in our Mac community. The demise of X Bastille, rise of Macgaming.com... News that the world is gonna love OS X, news that Apple's profits are wounded... We have Voodoo, we lose 3dfx... MacAddict.com slims down, Maccircuit.com and Utterer.com beef up... What do we need? Who do we call? Where are all those famous dead people Apple totes around on "Think Different" signs and how can we reanimate them to help us out?

Mac users are usually a minority anyway, and occasionally for quality control we end up shooting ourselves in the foot. Usually, it grows back, although not always looking the same. And sometimes, the mess becomes infected, and our remedy to remove what we thought was unsightly comes back to haunt us. We're a family. We've been pushed around so much by others as we grew that we're a little unweildly now. But in the case of Xappeal.org vs. X Bastille I'm rooting for the foot. I hope it gives its shooter a malady it deserves. With OS X on the horizon, someone at the "Mac Media Network" which is comprised of a surprisingly dull set of websites (but the name sure sounds like they're some big, important network, eh?) has decided that X Bastille parodied too close to their webdesign and threw out a cease and desist. Then, when the design did cease and desist, they pushed again. And threatened a lawsuit. Let me point out that this website they are picking on is not its own .com, and in fact is under the mac.com free website deal. And now, since the guy can't stand up to an expensive lawsuit (that, incidentally he would win--hello, it's a simple first Amendment case) the website has closed down. . I invite you to X Bastille's site to get a laugh at the letters the "MMN" (change the middle "m" to an "s" for full effect) and then I invite you to the X Appeal site so you can see what quality, Grade A content was fought for in such a puffed-up manner (please note that X Appeal's webmaster apologizes for not updating every other entry--apparently he was busy earning money to pay his lawyers). I bring this up to point out that our family is going through some growing pains, and this will include skirmishes like this, however silly. We have always been the creative, logical bunch quick with a parody of Microsoft and a smile of content bliss with our Macs despite the storm of rejection from PC users....but times must change.

But do we have to? OS X seems to be both the high water mark of what could be our finest hour worldwide, but will the same high water engulf the small towns that dug the river? I just hope that a certain special conference will save us...

But just in case I can only save myself, I crafted an email to Santa:

To: Santaclause@northpole.elf
From: deanb@skewedperspective.com

Subject: Re: Crap I want

Dear Santa,
I was wondering if you could tell me if I'll eventually get used to the OS X interface. If you think I won't, then could you please stuff a few $12-$20 money orders into my stocking to pay for all the shareware fixes? I'd like to make my system twice as expensive and twice as unstable instead of coping with change. Maybe throw in an extra so I can play Freeverse Setback (Pitch).

But if you think I'll dig it then I'd like an old Lobot Starwars action figure.

Thanks,
Dean

P.S. Can you send me to MWSF?
